Ready for the audit, every month.
ISO 50001, Kenya's Energy (Energy Management) Regulations, 2025 and carbon reporting all ask for the same evidence: a baseline, energy performance indicators, measured savings and a record of what you did. PlantOS keeps that evidence up to date from your meters.
The Energy Management Regulations, 2025, in plain words.
Who is designated
| Category | Annual electrical and thermal energy |
|---|---|
| Low consumer | 102,500 – 180,000 kWh |
| Medium consumer | 180,001 – 1,200,000 kWh |
| High consumer | above 1,200,000 kWh |
Fuel counts too, converted to kWh by its energy content. Most processing plants are medium or high consumers.
What medium and high consumers must do
- An energy audit by a licensed energy auditor at least once every four years, submitted to EPRA.
- An accredited energy manager for the facility.
- Implement the recommended measures to reach at least 50% of the projected savings within four years.
- Compare performance with EPRA's sector benchmarks (tea, sugar, dairy, cement and others, 2024).
A summary for managers, not legal advice. Check the Gazette notice and EPRA for your facility.
What PlantOS evidences for you.
Every section metered; significant energy uses ranked from measured data (clause 6.3).
kWh, fuel and cost per unit by day, lot and section; a production-normalised baseline with R² and CV(RMSE) (6.4, 6.5).
Signals, intervals, meters and accuracy recorded in PlantOS; gaps flagged automatically (6.6).
Limits and alarms on each significant energy use; field forms and permits with signatures (8.1).
Every measure verified before and after (IPMVP) and added to the savings ledger (9.1, 10.2).
Energy, emissions, water and quality signals monitored for ISO 14001 (6.1.2, 9.1).
Some clauses need decisions only your management can make (policy, competence, internal audit, management review). PlantOS lists them, records your evidence and shows a readiness score by clause. Certification itself is by an accredited body.
Scope 1 and 2, from metered data.
Monthly emissions follow the GHG Protocol corporate standard, from the fuel and electricity PlantOS already measures.
- Scope 2: grid electricity × 0.32 t CO₂ per MWh (Kenya grid, location-based; editable).
- Scope 1: fuel × IPCC 2006 factors (fuel oil 3.15, coal 2.42, diesel 2.68 t CO₂ per tonne). Firewood and bagasse reported separately as biogenic.
- Intensity per unit produced, and reductions from each verified measure.
Carbon credits: what is realistic
Energy-efficiency and fuel-switch reductions can earn credits under approved methods (Gold Standard, Verra, Article 6) after validation, monitoring and independent verification. Projects under roughly 5,000 t CO₂ a year are usually grouped into a programme to cover the costs. In Kenya, carbon projects need authorisation under the Climate Change (Carbon Markets) Regulations, 2024.
PlantOS shows the indicative tonnes and value range, and keeps the monitoring data a verifier asks for. We do not promise credit revenue.
